Thirumazhisai has infrastructure to turn into new Koyambedu

With Thirumazhisai on the western suburbs identical to Koyambedu  on infrastructure parameters such as a proposed mofussil bus terminus, metro rail yard and housing complex, urban development experts are underscoring that the former has the scope to emerge as the next Koyambedu of the city.

Housing and urban development sources said that about 50 acres of land in Thirumazhisai satellite township would make way for metro rail yard and mofussil bus terminus for west bound buses. A total of 127 acres of land is under the possession of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB), which is developing the satellite township.

“We will have the township, Metrorail yard and bus terminus in the existing land. Additional land can also be acquired for establishing another wholesale (permanent) market, though the present market is only a temporary facility,” a senior housing and urban development official said. There would be few more permanent wholesale markets in other parts of the city, as well, the official added. The state government is in the process of acquiring nearly 200 acres of land in the vicinity for the satellite township for building 20,000 apartment units.

Against this backdrop, operation of a market, proposed bus terminus, township and metro rail yard at Thirumazhisai mirrors the locality with the infrastructure eco-system of Koyambedu that comprises  Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, wholesale market, metro rail yard and a TNHB housing complex. Former professor of urban engineering at Anna University K P Subramanian said that Thirumazhisai has all the potential to grow rapidly like Koyambedu, in terms of location advantage and high accessibility. “Wholesale markets may be located at multiple locations, preferably along transport corridors to prevent over growth and the consequent adverse impacts,” he added.
